The weather has been perfect for running. I am not a great runner, but lately the running has been enjoyable. Every time I run a euphoric regeneration of my body happens. Strange but in two days I can already feel the need to jog.
The park I run through is covered with large mature trees. The path is narrow and weaving. This time of year the summer musky smell is faint. The only detectable odor is a slight hint of Springtime sweetness. I am telling you – it is really nice.
I have concluded that the natural beauty of the park is not enough. Music is a necessary ingredient for a good run. I need to escape the pain of my joints and the internal lazy guy that screams for me to “stop the madness!” (Do you know that guy?”) The other day I made a slight change to my routine and tried running to a new play list. The list was full of my favorite worship tunes. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. Worship God and get a good workout.
Midway through my running all I could think about was blah, blah, blah. What is excellent connect-with-God kind of music, was killing me. The inner lazy guy didn’t feel like worshiping or running. My run started to get hard, like running through deep sand dunes on a windy day. My heart needed some drums and a beat that got my blood going. I needed to alert crazy Mark who likes to push past pain. Lazy Mark was pitching a fit.
There is no leadership lesson tucked into this except for the fact that apparently I have a multiple personality disorder or something. I could also use some help beefing up my play list. Here, are my favorite running songs in order of play.
- Leanin Heavy – Farewell June
- Free Fallin’- Tom Petty
- Boomin’ – TobyMac
- I Won’t Back Down – Tom Petty
- Fireproof – Pillar
- Call To Action – Pillar
- God Talks – Aimee Allen
What would you add or subtract from my list? Please give me your best tunes, because the future of my running experience may rely on you.
“Testify to Love” sung by the group Avalon is one of my faves! Fast tempo with an AWESOME message!
Thanks Tina – I am on it. I too enjoy Avalon.
Great list, I really enjoy Pillar and TobyMac music. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Ed “Gonna Fly Now?” Like it – (when I was 10 or so.) I will check out Incubus you know I respect your musical taste.
Can’t wait to catch up next week.
Nice way to describe the inner struggle that is running, Mark. Sometimes I work my will more than my legs. My go to music is the fast paced stuff from our Sunday morning set lists. Pays to be in worship choir.
Kris, perhaps I should try out for choir and get the Sunday morning set lists as well. I was thinking that soon enough you will need your running list in Spanish. Then what?
